East Valley Tribune to shut down.

Truly sad for those involved, but it was hard not to see this coming:
The Tribune Newspapers will cease operations on Dec. 31, the parent company Freedom Communications said Monday.

Freedom officials made the announcement to Tribune employees Monday morning, citing the economic recession and changes in the newspaper industry that have cause many publications to close and others to file for bankruptcy protection.

Freedom, which itself is operating under Chapter 11 reorganization, had been attempting to sell the Tribune, but no acceptable offers have come forward, said Interim Chief Executive Burl Osborne.

“We have received a number of inquiries, but none at a level we would remotely consider,” he said, adding that “This is a terrible day for the company, a terrible day for the Tribune.”

I dropped my subscription to the Tribune way back when they changed from being the Mesa Tribune to the East Valley Tribune. I figured then that if I wanted a paper which was a mush of news from all over the Valley, I could (and did) subscribe to the Republic.

I still believe that Mesa is big enough to support it's own newspaper, but apparently those in the newspaper business don't find that there are enough others who agree with me.

I am torn about the rapid decline in newspaper (and other print) media. On one hand, they deserve to fail: They are predominantly and unapologetically liberal, and regardless of their bias, they have failed to find a way to use the internet to deliver their product at a profit. On the other hand, if all these media go the way of the dinosaurs, then how are we to get our news? The blogs which I frequent all base their posts on some news article grabbed up from somewhere.
