This one's for Dean.
Awful news from William Kristol.
A lot of people first got to know Dean from his influential Soxblog. I became acquainted from his frequent guest host appearances on The Hugh Hewitt Show. Affectionately nicknamed "Chowdah" by listeners, Dean was an unlikely political commentator but showed a natural talent. He always delivered unique insights, intellectual honesty and a grand sense of humor in his thick Boston accent. But what I most admired was his utter lack of pretense. In a world of self-promotion and gasbaggery, Dean was one-of-a-kind.
Long after becoming a fan, I discovered Dean had suffered from cystic fibrosis since childhood. When first diagnosed, he wasn't expected to live very long — or to achieve so many successes. He definitely made the most of his 41 years.
We've already missed you a great deal this campaign season, Dean. And we'll miss you even more now.
As for the upcoming election, I hope Dean's many fans can agree: Let's Win One for the Chowdah!
UPDATE: HotAir, Ace and Ed on the sad news. And I'm sure Hugh will have something powerful later today.
UPDATE #2: Hugh's remembrance is here.
It's my sad duty to report that our good friend and valued contributor
Dean Barnett passed away today. He was a remarkable man—principled,
witty, and to all of us, a model of grace and courage. We mourn his
passing and cherish his memory.
