Get off my lawn!

A lot of ink has been spilled about the newest Democratic attacks on McCain’s age. The group AmericansComingTogether created a video ad where twentysomethings ridicule McCain’s age for 90 seconds straight. Because American voters love snarky college students insulting their war-hero elders.

Only a few seconds in, I was ready to take my walking-stick and tan the hides of those insolent whippersnappers, by cracky. And I’m only 41. If they’re making Gen-Xers like me feel old, I can only imagine what retirees throughout the Sun Belt will think.

I spent a few minutes in Google and Excel to show voting percentage by age in the last presidential election:

That's right: the age cohort with the highest voting percentage is McCain's.

As a Republican, I only have one thing to say to AmericaComingTogether.

Thanks!

I'd vote for Barry, but he's a little too black. I'd vote for Hillary, but she's female. I'd vote for McCain, but he's too old. Pick your "ism." If the third is okay with Americans, why aren't the first two? O, you say, racism and sexism is verboten, but ageism is just fine and dandy. Puhleez.

My 84 y/o step-mother ,who knows absolutely nothing about politics or the candidate`s views told me, twice lately, that Hillary Clinton did not deserve to be president and that no woman was smart enough to be president!
I was shocked and told her I appalled and felt insulted! Was she saying that men were much smarter than women and she "Yes."Do many older people feel that way?

I detest McCain's old-fashioned, conservative politics and unpredictableness but I agree that age and experience should not be an issue in this election.

There are important advantages to having an old president. First, there is their greater experience while in office. Second, being much older when they leave office, they will not have nearly as many years to make complete and utter asses of themselves in the manner of Carter and Clinton.

Yeah, I'm 42 and only recently began having "oh my God I'm hitting middle age" issues. Listening to a bunch of whiny brats is not going to do much to persuade me to their views. When I was in college I knew an old lady (mid-40s!) who thought that when a person hits 15, they need to be locked on a reservation and kept from the rest of humanity until they turn 25; in those ten years they'd be cared for and educated, but their incarceration was basically for the benefit of everybody else. At the time I thought it was a barbaric idea. But hey, I'm older now.

Not only are older voters more likely to vote, but there are also more of them! Baby Boomers greatly outnumber whipper snappers. Compounding these two factors and the problem Dems are creating for themselves are even worse.

And another thing...It is no more acceptable to make derisive remarks about John's age than it is to blast Barak's race or Hillary's sex. Republicans don't publish ads like that. As a party, Republicans are blind to meaningless distinctions, focusing instead on merit. Shame on the Democrats and their Identity Politics. Did they ever listen to Martin Luther King? Do they only judge his work by the color of his skin or by the content of his character?

Yeah, those punk kids really convinced me.
I always thought being older was an asset to be desired in a leader that had shown good judgement through their lifetime.

It appears that the video makers think it would be better to have some kid be president. Well I have two words for youth leadership...

TECH BOOM! We all know how that turned out with the 25 year old CEOs...

Age and the Candidate [Ramesh Ponnuru]

Jim Geraghty's post—commenting on an attack on McCain based on his age, and suggesting that it won't go over well with older voters—sent me to the 1996 exit polls on the Dole vs. Clinton race. On the question of whether Dole's age would affect his ability to be president, 34 percent said yes and 64 percent said no. But the people who were concerned about Dole's age broke much more heavily against him than the people who were unconcerned broke for him. The people who worried about Dole's age went 79-12 for Clinton over Dole, while the unconcerned went 58-34 for Dole over Clinton.

Can we conclude that Dole would have won if he had been younger? I don't think so. My guess is that to some extent a respondent's voting intention determined his answer to this question rather than the reverse. These exit polls do not have a breakdown of the respondents, but I recall that in 1996 there were reports that older voters were more likely than younger ones to express concern about Dole's age.

    Interesting story.

I gotta say, reading about this stupid AmericansComingTogether video bugs me. I'm certainly not gonna watch it, as it sounds like nothing more than a bunch of whiners with too much time on their hands. And I'm 24 and a college student! I can only imagine how people older than me feel about it.

As for McCain's age, big deal. What really matters are his views, decisions, accomplishments, etc. - the same for any candidate. Based on that, I intend to vote for McCain in the general election.
