Todd's October eMusic Roundup

I've been an eMusic customer for nearly two years, and I'm always amazed at the quality and variety of music available for a very reasonable price.  I can download up to 40 DRM-free MP3s a month for the low price of just $9.99.  The catalog leans toward smaller, independent labels, but I'm often able to find Indie up-and-comers there.  While I might not be able to get the latest Decemberists album (now that they are on a major label), I've got all their previous work.  Artists like Sufjan Stevens, Pedro the Lion, Matt Pond and countless others are represented.

Now there is a new reason to become a member.  Starting November 21st, the number of tracks you are able to download for each plan will be reduced - unless you are a current member and the terms will remain the same as long as you continue your membership.

Ok, enough of the sales pitch.  Each month, I will share my finds with you.  Hopefully we can coax exurb-Jon into sharing some of his recommendations as well (eMusic or otherwise).

On to my downloads/recommendations for October!

Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
I'm familiar with Neko Case through her work with Canadian indie rockers The New Pornographers.  Their latest release, Twin Cinema, was one of the highlights of 2005 in my book.  This is my first foray into her solo work, and I absolutely love this album.  Check out the title track and my favorite, track 12 ("The Needle Has Landed").  Highly recommended!

Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and Will Beat Your Ass
I think my first exposure to New Jersey threesome Yo La Tengo was back around 1997, opening up for Tanya Donnely's Belly.  YLT stole the show.  Tracks like "Moby Octopad" of 1997s I Can Hear Your the Heart Beating as One capture what I like about their sound.  I have to admit I primarily bought this album based on its title, but the album does not disappoint.  Its eclectic, but quite listenable.

Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of This Country
Glaswegians Camera Obscura have apparently been around for a decade, but this is my first album.  I got this following a recommendation from my sister.  After listening to the excellent first track "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken", I had high expectations.  Unfortunately, for me, most of the rest of the album falls a bit flat (tracks 6 and 8 standing out, however).

Everyone is raving about the Yo La Tengo album. Currently I only own their other CD you mentioned, but I think it's time to double the collection.

Are eMusic downloads permanent? That is, do you lose all your previous downloads if you cancel your subscription, or do you get to keep them?

      Anon,

They are permanent. You can cancel at any time and keep your music. And you can play them on any player you like, no proprietary codecs.
